2020 Review

2020 Review

2020 was a weird year. Some of the best things happened to me amidst major tragedies and difficulties.

In January, I was in a play which really reignited my interested in performance and acting. In February, I started a new job with the title of Senior Software Engineer. I was in office for only a couple weeks before lockdown started and we went full-time remote in April.

My partner finished school and moved in to the house and started looking for a job, which she found recently! We adopted a new pup and new cat, did a ton of house projects (the basement flooded so. many. times.), and did our best to not drive each other up the walls during quarantine.

With the Civil Rights movement kicking off this summer, I learned a lot about anti-racism, diversity and inclusion, and radical justice. I've become even more firmly planted in my leftist ideologies and had some very good conversations with friends and family about how we all move forward together. I got involved with mutual aid and donated to some really great causes. I also started learning about Street Medic work and I'm hoping to take a class in that sometime soon.

I've also picked up a few new projects this year. serialfork is a concept for a hackerspace here in Indy that I've started working on with a friend. Functions and Dragons is a D&D livestream where I DM for the best group of people I've ever met. Equip is an idea I've been kicking around for a long time that is finally getting off the ground!

Despite lockdown and COVID and all the other things this year has given us, I (virtually) met some of the best people I've ever know and become friends with some folks that I really appreciate.

All in all, this year has been full of wildness, ups and downs, and lots of changes. More than ever, I understand the importance of mutual aid, socialism, and community. Moving forward, I think my purpose lies in supporting those initiatives, in both my work and my life. 2021 might be just as bad as 2020, but I know we can get through it together.
